DAMA International Board resigns to facilitate open and transparent elections to ensure continued de see more

    Press Release

    San Diego – 22nd April 2018 Updated: 25 April 2018

DAMA International Board resigns to facilitate open and transparent elections to ensure continued development of the organisation.

The Board of DAMA International has stood down today, in a manner which will ensure continued operational support pending the election of new officers to the Board of the Association. This move has been prompted by increasingly personal and unfounded attacks on the personal and professional credibility of Board Officers in public and private forums which have prevented the Board from concluding a number of strategic projects including bylaw reform and continued development of certification and Body of Knowledge services.

Jan Hendryckx, President’s Council Chair commented: “We felt it best to hit the reset button and allow a new Board to be convened as soon as possible to allow the organisation to move forward into our next 30 years.”

Sue Geuens, President of DAMA International added: “We have laid foundations for the next 30 years of DAMA. We look forward to the next generation of data management leaders building DAMA International as a robust and vibrant professional body for Data Management professionals.”

The Board of DAMA International has resigned en masse today, 22nd April 2018. Consistent with the bylaws of DAMA International. Non-essential board members resignations are effective immediately and their board positions vacated as of 22 April 2018. Although, no longer serving on the DAMA I board some individuals have expressed a willingness to continue to volunteer, as needed, to support DAMA I operations. Essential board members as mandated by bylaws, specifically: President, VP of Operations and VP of Finance (Treasurer) have resigned effective 31 May 2018 in keeping with the Board's January resolution to temporarily extend term of current board for a limited period or until such time as a new Board is elected and constituted, whichever comes first.

In recent weeks individual Board members, volunteers, and contract administration staff have been subject to increasingly intense personal and professional attack in public and private forums. The Board members decided that the best approach for the Association and its members for the Board to step down to allow the organisation as a whole to focus on the delivery of value to members in the organistion’s 30th Anniversary.

Speaking this morning, Sue Geuens, the President of DAMA-I commented “Our Board has worked tirelessly over the last four years to improve the operational delivery of DAMA International to serve our members world-wide. The past two years have seen the release of DMBOK2, the release of a revised CDMP certification framework and online exam delivery capability, the foundation of a rapidly growing number of DAMA Chapters outside the United States.”  Ms Geuens continued: “ While we have not been able to complete our strategic changes to the operation of the Association, we have laid foundations for the future of the organisation and we look forward to the next generation of leadership taking up the torch and continuing to build DAMA as a robust and vibrant professional body for Data Management professionals.”

Jan Henderyckx, the Chair of DAMA’s President’s Council, highlighted the significant financial performance improvement in DAMA. “While we are still finalising the annual accounts, our current forecast is we will yet again have significantly increased our revenues year on year. As a not-for-profit organisation, any additional revenue is ultimately reinvested in the development of resources and services for members and to help support chapters. However, the challenges of the last few months have made it impossible for the current Board to execute on our plans for investment. We felt it best to hit the reset button and allow a new Board to be convened as soon as possible to allow the organisation to move forward into our next 30 years”.

Missy Wittmann, the VP of Conferences added: “We are looking forward as an organisation to celebrating our 30th birthday with our chapters and members around the world, and carrying forward the momentum we’ve built over the last four years in the evolution of DAMA as the premier professional organisation for data management professionals.”

DAMA-I Board members that have resigned or served notice will continue to function as volunteers in their roles in an operational capacity to ensure support for the members, Chapters, Certification holders and candidates, and our various commercial partners around the world until 31 May 2018 or until a new board is elected whichever comes first.

An elections process is expected to commence shortly under the stewardship of Dr Peter Aiken, the Past-President of DAMA International. DAMA-I would welcome volunteers from organisations outside DAMA to assist in the independent oversight of this election cycle. Anyone interested in assisting ensuring the transparency and governance of the election should contact elections@dama.org.

    Revisions:

    • Original release broadly stated that board had stood down, and inaccurately stated members were going to continue function as an operational board. The release has been updated to use more accurately describe the current status off board members and resignation timelines.
