DAMA DMBOK 2.0 Revision – Maintenance Release

The 2024 Revision of the DAMA-DMBOK 2.0 ®  is a maintenance release. It was undertaken to improve clarity, consistency, and usability without altering the foundational structure, framework, or scope of the DAMA DMBOK ® . This update aligns with DAMA International’s commitment to ensuring that the Body of Knowledge remains accurate, relevant, and accessible for practitioners, educators, and certification candidates.

This maintenance release includes terminology updates, minor structural refinements, and improved representations, reflecting developments in practice and aligning more closely with the Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) ®  examination. No material changes were made to the overarching data management framework, knowledge areas, or their definitions.

Below is a summary of the key improvements included in this revision:

  1. Terminology and Structure Enhancements
  • Standardized Terminology: Terminology and acronyms have been unified across chapters for consistency.
  • Improved Context Diagrams: All 12 diagrams were revised for clarity and better visual understanding.
  • Chronological Activity Ordering: Activities within context diagrams are now sequenced to reflect process flow more logically.
  • Streamlined Concepts: Content has been reordered and simplified to improve comprehension and navigation.

 

  1. Data Management Roles
  • Data Integration Developer: Replaces the generic "Interface Developer" to better reflect current industry roles.
  • Inclusion of Data Scientists: Recognized as key data consumers, especially in analytics and integration.
  • Updated Data Owner Definition: Now explicitly defined as a business person accountable for decisions within a domain.

 

  1. Data Governance Updates
  • Terminology Change: “Data governance program” is now referred to as the “data governance function”.
  • AI Governance and Ethics: Ethical considerations and governance practices for AI have been integrated.
  • Data Asset Valuation: Updated to define data as an “intangible asset” rather than a “non-fungible item”.
  • Governance Touchpoints: Now positioned directly under the authority of the data governance function.
  1. Data Quality Improvements
  • Enhanced Chapter: The Data Quality chapter includes a new appendix for deeper reference.
  • Clearer Dimensions: Tables describing data quality dimensions have been refined with examples.
  • Cross-Functional Connections: Section six now clearly links data quality to other knowledge areas like:
    • Data Modeling
    • Master and Reference Data Management
    • Metadata Management
    • Data Integration and Interoperability
    • Data Governance
  1. Other Notable Revisions
  • Corrections and Typos: Errors and inconsistencies across all chapters have been addressed.
  • New Quality Dimension: Currency added as a recognized dimension of data quality.
  • Definition of Critical Data Elements: Now explicitly included in the text.
  • Appendix Relocation: ISO content and related quality dimension information from Section 1.3.5 moved to an appendix for better reference.
